What data is processed and why
When you visit the site
The site is delivered through Cloudflare. When you open a page, Cloudflare receives technical data such as your IP address, your browser and the page requested. This is needed to deliver the site and to protect it from overload and attacks. The legal basis is legitimate interests in running a secure site (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR).
Advertising (Google AdSense)
The site is free to use and is funded by Google AdSense advertising. When you visit, Google shows a consent message where you decide whether Google may use cookies and similar technologies for advertising. The site uses consent mode, so Google's tags adjust to your choice.
- If you accept, Google may use cookies to personalise ads to your interests and to measure how well they work.
- If you do not accept, ads are not personalised by consent-based cookies and no cookies are stored for advertising purposes. Google may still process data such as your IP address to deliver the ad and prevent abuse.
The legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR and Regulation 6 of PECR). You can change your choice at any time using the privacy and cookie settings link that Google provides on the page, or by deleting cookies in your browser. More about how Google uses data is in Google's information on partner sites. You can also manage personalised advertising at aboutads.info or Your Online Choices.
Statistics (Google Analytics)
If Google Analytics is used on the site, it only sets cookies after consent, and only when you have accepted statistics cookies in the consent message. It is used to understand how many people visit and which recipes are read, so the site can be improved, and it is not used to identify individual visitors. The legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR and Regulation 6 of PECR). Without consent, Google may receive anonymous, cookie-free signals (for example that a page was viewed) through consent mode, which cannot be linked to you.
Cookie-free visitor statistics (Cloudflare Web Analytics)
The site also uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read and where visitors come from. This is done without cookies and without storing anything in your browser, and Cloudflare does not use the data to recognise you across visits or across websites. The legal basis is legitimate interests in understanding how the site is used (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR).
When you rate a recipe
You can rate a recipe from 1 to 5 stars. To stop the same person voting repeatedly, a hash (a scrambled code) calculated from your IP address and the recipe is kept for 30 days. The IP address itself is not stored and the hash cannot be used to identify you. Your browser also keeps a marker in local storage (localStorage) showing that you have voted, so the stars appear as already given when you return. The legal basis is legitimate interests in keeping ratings reliable (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR).
When you write to the editorial team
If you send an e-mail, your address and message are used to reply to you. The e-mail is kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and is then deleted. The legal basis is legitimate interests in answering questions and correction notices (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR).
