Cheese Toastie in the Air Fryer
A cheese toastie from a frying pan needs a hot pan, a lot of turning and a fair bit of butter, and the cheese still tends to stay firm in the middle. A cheese toastie in air fryer baskets cooks from all sides at once, so the bread turns crisp and golden and the cheese melts through in 6–8 minutes. You need no toastie maker, just a basket and a way to keep the top slice in place.

Why the air fryer works for cheese toasties
Making a cheese toastie in air fryer machines works because the bread is heated from above and below at the same time. In a pan, only one side touches the heat, so you turn the toastie again and again to melt the middle. In the air fryer, the hot air crisps both crusts evenly while the cheese melts inside, with far less butter than a frying pan.
The only real challenge is that the fan can lift a light slice of bread. A bit of weight on top keeps the sandwich closed and gives a neat, even toastie. If you prefer an open slice, try cheese on toast instead, which is a quick open version without a lid. Most 4–6 litre air fryers fit two toasties at once; use a second batch for more.
How to make a cheese toastie in the air fryer
Tap a time to start a timer.
- Butter the bread Spread the softened butter thinly on one side of each slice. This side will be the outside of the toastie, and the butter is what makes the crust crisp and golden.
- Build the toastie Place two slices buttered side down on a board. Spread a little mustard on them if using, then pile the grated cheddar on top, leaving a 1 cm border so the cheese does not melt out. Close with the other slices, buttered side up.
- Preheat and secure Preheat the air fryer to 180 °C for . Place the toasties in the basket, side by side. Because the fan can lift the top slice, put a small metal trivet or rack on top, or tuck the edges under a folded square of foil, to hold it down.
- Cook Cook for , then turn the toasties over with a spatula and cook for more, until the bread is deep golden and the cheese is bubbling at the edges.
- Rest and cut Let the toasties stand for , as the cheese is very hot. Cut them in half diagonally and serve straight away.

Tips
- Grate the cheese. Grated cheddar melts faster and more evenly than slices. Mix in a little mozzarella for stretch, or add a pinch of mustard powder for sharpness.
- Use medium-thick bread. Slices of around 1 cm hold the filling and crisp well. Very thin bread dries out, while very thick bread needs a lower temperature.
- Butter the outside, not the inside. The butter on the outside browns and crisps. Butter on the inside only makes the filling greasy.
Serving
Cut the toastie into triangles and serve it with a bowl of tomato soup for dipping, or with roasted tomatoes and a green salad. For a more filling lunch, add bacon inside, or cook your own bread first with the bread recipe. A cheese toastie in air fryer baskets is also a quick answer to a late-night snack.
Storing and reheating
A toastie is best fresh, because the crust softens as it cools. If you have leftovers, keep them in the fridge for up to 1 day and reheat in the air fryer at 160 °C for 3–4 minutes, turning once, until the toastie is steaming hot all the way through (75 °C) and the cheese is melted again.
Variations
- Ham and cheese toastie: Add two slices of cooked ham between the cheese layers. Cook for an extra minute to heat the ham through. It is no longer vegetarian.
- Cheese and onion: Add a spoonful of finely chopped spring onion or a layer of chutney for a classic pub-style toastie.
- Pizza toastie: Spread a teaspoon of tomato purée inside, add mozzarella and a pinch of oregano.
Troubleshooting
- The top slice blows off or lifts
- The fan is moving the light bread. Press the sandwich flat, add a small trivet, rack or foil weight on top for the first half of the cooking time, or secure the corners with two cocktail sticks.
- The cheese melts out and burns
- There is too much filling or it is too close to the edge. Grate the cheese rather than slicing it, and leave a 1 cm border so the bread can seal when pressed.
- The bread is crisp but the cheese is solid
- The toastie was cooked too hot and fast. Lower the heat to 170 °C and cook for 1–2 minutes longer, so the cheese melts before the crust darkens.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a cheese toastie take in the air fryer?
Usually 6–8 minutes at 180 °C, turned halfway. Thicker bread or a lot of filling can take up to 10 minutes.
Can you make a toastie in an air fryer without butter?
Yes. Brush the outside with a thin layer of oil or use an oil spray. You get a crisp crust, but butter gives more flavour and colour.
Can you use frozen bread for a toastie in the air fryer?
Yes, but add 1–2 minutes and keep the heat at 170 °C. Defrosted bread is easier to seal and handle.
What is the difference between a cheese toastie and cheese on toast?
A toastie is a sealed sandwich cooked until the cheese melts inside the bread. Cheese on toast is an open slice topped with cheese. Cheese on toast is quicker, but it has no lid to hold the steam.
Can you make a grilled cheese in an air fryer?
Yes, a grilled cheese sandwich is the American name for a cheese toastie. The method, timing and temperature are the same.
