Nachos in the Air Fryer
Nachos in the oven mean heating a whole oven for ten minutes, and the chips at the edge often burn while the middle is still cold. Air fryer nachos melt in 4 to 5 minutes, with crisp chips and cheese that bubbles right to the edge. The only things to watch are the light chips, which can blow around, and how long you leave them in.

Why the air fryer works for nachos
Air fryer nachos work because the cheese melts quickly and the chips stay crisp. The hot air heats from every side, so the cheese is bubbling in a few minutes, long before the chips go soft. In the oven the tray takes much longer to heat up, and the chips often dry out or burn before the topping is ready.
Nachos in air fryer machines also suit a small snack for two or three people. A 4–6 litre basket holds one layered portion, and you can make a second batch while the first is eaten. The main thing is to prevent the light chips lifting into the fan, which is solved by cheese on top and a small ovenproof dish. If you want to know how long to heat nachos in air fryer baskets, 4 to 5 minutes at 180 °C is the answer.

- Prepare the dish Line the basket with a sheet of perforated baking paper, or use a small ovenproof dish or foil tray that fits inside. Loose paper without holes can block the airflow, so make sure it is weighed down by the food.
- Layer the nachos Spread half the chips in the dish, then add half the cheese, beans and jalapeños. Add the remaining chips and the rest of the toppings, finishing with cheese on top so it weighs the chips down.
- Cook Cook at 180 °C for , until the cheese has melted and is starting to bubble at the edges. Check after , because the thin chips at the edge can brown fast.
- Finish Remove carefully, as the dish will be hot. Scatter over the tomato and spring onions and serve with the salsa and soured cream straight away.

Tips
- Layer, do not pile. Two thin layers with cheese between them give even melting, while a single deep pile leaves the bottom dry.
- Use mature cheddar. It melts well and gives a stronger flavour than mild cheese. A little mozzarella makes it stretchier.
- Add wet toppings last. Salsa, guacamole and soured cream go on after cooking, so the chips stay crisp.
Serving
Serve the nachos straight away as a snack for a film night, or as a starter. They go well with chicken wings and potato wedges for a sharing platter. For a larger meal, add chicken strips or serve with a fresh salad.
Storing and reheating
Nachos are best eaten fresh. If you have leftovers, keep them in a covered container in the fridge for 1 day, and reheat in the air fryer at 160 °C for 2–3 minutes until hot all the way through. Any topping with cooked meat should be reheated until steaming hot (75 °C in the centre).
Variations
- Loaded nachos: Add 100 g cooked minced beef or shredded chicken between the layers, and make sure the meat is fully cooked before you start.
- Vegetarian refried beans: Spoon 4 tbsp refried beans over the first layer of chips for a thicker, smoother topping.
- Tortilla wrap nachos: Cut wraps into triangles, brush with oil, crisp at 180 °C for 4–5 minutes, then add cheese and cook for 2–3 minutes more.
Troubleshooting
- The chips blow around and burn
- Light tortilla chips lift in the fan. Put the cheese on top, use an ovenproof dish and do not cook for longer than 5 minutes.
- The cheese is melted but the chips underneath are soggy
- There were too many wet toppings. Drain the beans and jalapeños, add salsa and soured cream after cooking, and keep the layers to two.
- The cheese on top burns before the lower layer melts
- Use smaller batches and spread the cheese between the layers as well as on top. Drop to 170 °C if your air fryer runs hot.
Frequently asked questions
How long do nachos take in an air fryer?
4–5 minutes at 180 °C is enough to melt the cheese. Check after 3 minutes, as thin chips can darken quickly.
Can you make nachos in the air fryer from tortilla wraps?
Yes. Cut wraps into triangles, brush lightly with oil and cook at 180 °C for 4–5 minutes, shaking once, until crisp. Then add the toppings and return for 2–3 minutes to melt the cheese.
How do you reheat nachos in the air fryer?
Spread them in a single layer and heat at 160 °C for 2–3 minutes. They will not be as crunchy as fresh, but the cheese will soften again.
Should you cook nachos in the air fryer or the oven?
The air fryer is quicker, about 5 minutes against 10–12 in the oven, and suits portions for two or three. For a big sharing tray the oven is easier.
