Why the air fryer works for potato waffles
Cooking potato waffles in air fryer baskets suits their shape. The deep square grid gives the hot air plenty of edges to crisp, while the thin base heats right through before it dries out. The result is a waffle that is crunchy on the ridges and soft in the pockets, which is exactly what the grill tends to miss.
It also saves time and energy. Heating a full oven for six waffles is a waste, and under a grill you have to keep watching. In an air fryer you set the time and the machine does the rest, so potato waffles in air fryer batches are a quick breakfast, a child's tea or a fast side for an egg on toast.

Tips
- Cook from frozen. The ice evaporates quickly in the hot air. Thawing first makes the waffles floppy.
- Do not stack them. Waffles piled up steam each other. If you need more, cook two rounds and keep the first in a low oven.
- Adjust for the size. Mini waffles and thin waffles cook 2 minutes faster, so check them early.
Sweet waffles
Frozen sweet waffles can be toasted in the air fryer for 3–4 minutes at 170 °C until crisp, then topped with butter, syrup or fruit. A batter waffle needs a waffle maker and cannot be poured directly into the basket, so check the pack and use the air fryer only for reheating. For breakfast pancakes, see pancakes in the air fryer.
Serving
Serve potato waffles with a fried or scrambled egg and baked beans for a classic tea, or with fish fingers and peas. They are also good with bacon and grilled tomato, or topped with cheese for a quick lunch. Other freezer favourites are covered in the frozen food guide.
Storing and reheating
Cooked potato waffles are best eaten straight away, but leftovers keep for 1 day in the fridge. Reheat in the air fryer at 180 °C for 3–4 minutes until crisp and steaming hot all the way through (75 °C).
Variations
- Cheesy waffles: Sprinkle grated cheddar over the waffles for the last minute until it melts.
- Waffle sandwich: Fill two cooked waffles with bacon, egg and a little brown sauce.
- Spiced waffles: Dust the hot waffles with smoked paprika and salt for a snack.
Troubleshooting
- The potato waffles are dry or burnt at the edges
- The air fryer ran too hot or the waffles were left too long. Drop to 180 °C for thinner waffles and check them after 6 minutes.
- The waffles are soft rather than crisp
- The basket was crowded. Cook in a single layer, never stacked, and give the waffles a light spray of oil before they go in.
- The waffles blow around in the basket
- The fan can lift very light food. Lay the waffles flat and, if your air fryer has a rack, put it over the top to hold them down.
