Tortilla Chips in the Air Fryer
A bag of shop-bought tortilla chips is gone in one sitting, but a packet of wraps in the cupboard makes the same thing in about 10 minutes. Cut them into wedges, brush with a little oil and the hot air turns them thin, crisp and golden. You get as many chips as you need, seasoned the way you like, with no deep fryer and no mess.

Why the air fryer works for tortilla chips
Air fryer tortilla chips are one of the easiest snacks you can make from store-cupboard ingredients. A wrap is already thin, so it needs little more than hot, moving air to dry it out and turn it crisp. Frying in oil soaks into the dough and makes it heavy, whereas the air fryer gives light, crunchy chips with only a teaspoon or two of oil spread across the whole batch.
It also gives you control. You choose the wrap, the thickness, the salt and the spices, and you can make just enough for one bowl instead of opening a big bag. This works for flour wraps, corn tortillas and low-carb versions, and the hot air handles all of them in under 10 minutes.

- Cut the wraps Stack the wraps and cut them into 8 triangles each, like a pizza. A sharp knife or pizza wheel gives clean edges, which brown evenly.
- Oil and season Put the wedges in a large bowl, add the oil and toss with your hands until every piece has a very thin coat. Sprinkle over the salt and smoked paprika and toss again.
- Preheat Heat the air fryer to 180 °C for . Thin wraps cook fast, so a hot basket helps them crisp before they dry out.
- Cook in batches Spread half the wedges in the basket in a loose single layer, with as little overlap as you can. Cook for , shaking the basket after . They are ready when golden at the edges and no longer bendy.
- Cool and repeat Tip the chips onto a wire rack or plate, where they crisp up further in . Cook the second batch the same way. Watch the last minute closely, because wraps go from golden to burnt quickly.

Tips
- Cut the wedges evenly. Pieces of the same size crisp at the same time, so none are burnt while others stay soft. Eight triangles per large wrap is a good size for dipping.
- Never fill the basket. Crowded chips steam instead of crisping. Two thin batches are quicker overall than one thick batch that needs rescuing.
- Let them cool before judging. Tortilla chips keep crisping as they cool, so a chip that is slightly soft straight from the basket is often perfect two minutes later.
Serving
Serve tortilla chips in air fryer batches while still slightly warm, with salsa, guacamole, soured cream or hummus. For a hot snack, pile them onto a baking tray with grated cheese and make nachos, or break them over a bowl of refried beans and eggs for a quick brunch. Homemade chips are also the base for chilaquiles, where they are simmered in tomato sauce until just soft. If you like a salty crunch with a drink, chickpeas make a good second bowl.
Storing and reheating
Let the chips cool completely, then store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If they soften, reheat them in the air fryer at 160 °C for 1–2 minutes and leave them to cool for a minute on a plate. Chips that have been topped with cheese or other fillings should be eaten the same day.
Variations
- Cinnamon sugar chips: Brush the wedges with melted butter or oil, then sprinkle with 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon. Cook at 180 °C for 3–4 minutes and serve with fruit or yoghurt. These are not vegan if you use butter.
- Lime and chilli: Add the zest of 1 lime and ½ tsp chilli flakes to the oiled wedges before cooking, and squeeze over a little juice at the end.
- Cheesy chips: Toss the cooked chips with 2 tbsp finely grated parmesan while they are still warm. The recipe is then no longer vegan or dairy-free.
Troubleshooting
- The chips are chewy in the middle
- The wedges overlapped, so steam stayed trapped. Cook smaller batches in a single layer and shake halfway. Return any soft pieces for 1 minute.
- The edges burn before the centres crisp
- The temperature is too high for your machine. Drop to 170 °C and check from 3 minutes, as every basket-style air fryer runs a little differently.
- The seasoning does not stick
- Season while the oil is still on the surface, before cooking. Fine salt and ground spices cling better than flakes, and a light spray of oil helps further.
Frequently asked questions
How long do tortilla chips take in an air fryer?
Flour wedges take 4–5 minutes at 180 °C, and corn tortillas 5–6 minutes. Shake the basket halfway and take them out as soon as they are golden.
Can you make tortilla chips from wraps in the air fryer?
Yes, ordinary flour wraps work very well and give lighter, slightly blistered chips. Cut them into wedges, oil them lightly and cook in a single layer.
Can you make tortilla chips in the air fryer without oil?
You can. Wraps cooked dry at 180 °C still crisp, but they turn out paler and drier, and salt will not stick. A light spray of oil gives a better result.
How do you reheat tortilla chips in an air fryer?
Spread stale or soft chips in the basket and heat them at 160 °C for 1–2 minutes. Let them cool for a minute on a plate so they crisp up again.
Can you use low carb tortillas?
Yes, but they brown faster and can taste slightly bitter if overdone. Start at 170 °C for 3 minutes and check often.
