Pasta Bake in the Air Fryer

A pasta bake is the easy dinner that usually means heating the whole oven for half an hour. An air fryer pasta bake gives you the same bubbling tomato sauce and browned cheese on top in about 15 minutes, in a dish that suits two or three people. You boil the pasta briefly, stir it into a quick sauce and let the hot air finish the job.

Why the air fryer works for pasta bake

An air fryer pasta bake is quick because the dish is small and the heat is fierce. The fan blows hot air over the cheese, so it melts and browns in minutes, and the part-cooked pasta finishes in the tomato sauce below. You get a crisp, golden crust and a soft middle without waiting for a big oven to heat up.

Pasta bake in air fryer baskets also uses fewer pans than people expect: one for the pasta, one for the sauce and the dish itself. The method is forgiving, so it works with a jar of sauce, leftover vegetables or whatever cheese is in the fridge. The only rule is to keep the sauce a little loose, because the pasta drinks it up as it bakes.

How to make pasta bake in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Part-cook the pasta Boil the penne in salted water for , about less than the packet says. It will finish cooking in the sauce, so drain it while it still has a firm bite, keeping a mug of the cooking water.
  2. Make the sauce While the pasta boils, heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the onion and pepper for . Add the garlic for , then the tomatoes, water, oregano, salt and pepper. Simmer for .
  3. Combine Stir the drained pasta into the sauce along with half the mozzarella. Tip it into a heatproof dish about 18 cm across and 6 cm deep that fits your basket, and level the top.
  4. Add the topping Scatter the rest of the mozzarella and the cheddar over the top. A lid of foil is not needed, but press any pasta tips that stick out down into the sauce so they do not burn.
  5. Bake Preheat the air fryer to 180 °C for , lower the dish in and cook for , until the cheese is golden and the sauce bubbles at the edges.
  6. Rest Leave the dish to stand for before serving, so the sauce thickens slightly and the cheese is not molten hot.

Tips

  • Choose short, sturdy pasta. Penne, rigatoni and fusilli hold their shape and trap sauce. Very thin pasta dries out in the moving air.
  • Keep the layer thin. A depth of 5–6 cm in the dish cooks evenly. If you have more, make two smaller dishes and cook one after the other.
  • Add a crunchy topping. A spoonful of breadcrumbs mixed with the grated cheddar gives a crisper top and uses up stale bread.

Serving

Serve the bake straight from the dish with a green salad or some broccoli roasted alongside it. It sits well in the dinner section as a midweek meal, and a cold slice makes a decent packed lunch. This air fryer pasta bake is also an easy way to feed children, because you control exactly how much cheese goes on top.

Storing and reheating

Cool leftovers quickly and keep them in a covered container in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat, spoon a portion into a small dish, add a splash of water, cover with foil and heat at 160 °C for 8–10 minutes. Remove the foil for the last 2 minutes to crisp the cheese, and check that it is steaming hot all the way through (75 °C) before you eat it.

Variations

  • Tuna pasta bake: Stir a drained tin of tuna and a handful of sweetcorn into the sauce. This version is not vegetarian.
  • Chicken and spinach: Add 200 g cooked chicken pieces and a handful of spinach. Heat until the chicken is steaming hot all through (75 °C). This version is not vegetarian.
  • Lasagnette bake: Break lasagnette ribbons into 5 cm lengths, boil for 5 minutes and use them in place of the penne.

Troubleshooting

The pasta is hard in the middle
It was boiled for too short a time or the sauce was too thick. Boil for the full 6 minutes and loosen the sauce with 2–3 tbsp of the pasta water before baking.
The top burns before the cheese melts
The dish sits too close to the heating element. Use a shallower amount of pasta, or cover the dish with foil for the first 8 minutes and remove it for the rest.
The bake is dry
Pasta keeps absorbing sauce. Make the sauce a little looser than you would for a normal supper, because it thickens as it bakes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does pasta bake take in the air fryer?

About 12–15 minutes at 180 °C once the pasta is part-cooked and mixed with sauce. A bigger, deeper dish needs another 5 minutes, covered with foil.

Can you cook pasta bake in an air fryer with uncooked pasta?

It is possible with extra liquid, covered tightly with foil for 25–30 minutes, but the result is less even. Part-cooking the pasta first gives a more reliable texture.

How do you reheat pasta bake in the air fryer?

Put a portion in a small dish with a splash of water, cover with foil and heat at 160 °C for 8–10 minutes. Make sure it is steaming hot all the way through before eating.

Is lasagnette the same as a pasta bake?

Lasagnette is a ribbon pasta, not a dish. It works well in a pasta bake, broken into short lengths and treated like penne.

What dish do you need for a pasta bake in the air fryer?

A heatproof ceramic dish or foil tray about 18 cm across, with a gap round the sides so the air can circulate. Deep, narrow dishes cook less evenly.
