Why the air fryer works for onion rings
Onion rings in air fryer baskets suit their coating. Frozen rings are already battered or breaded and pre-fried, so they do not need more oil. The hot air heats the crumb from every side, drives off moisture and leaves the outside crisp, while the onion inside steams in its own juices and turns soft and sweet.
The oven and the pan both have drawbacks: the oven often leaves the base soft, and a pan needs a lot of oil. Frozen onion rings air fryer style are done in around 10 minutes and the basket drains away any fat the coating releases. The same method works for homemade onion rings, which need a dry coating of flour, egg and crumbs rather than a wet batter. Wet batters drip through the basket and do not set.

Tips
- Cook from frozen. The coating crisps best when it goes into the hot air hard and cold. Thawed rings go limp and may fall apart.
- Turn, do not stack. Turn the rings with tongs once, halfway. If the rings pile up, cook in two batches.
- Follow the packet for your brand. Coatings vary a lot, so use the time here as a guide and check the pack for any differences.
Serving
Serve onion rings with a hamburger, grilled sausages or chicken wings and a pot of ketchup, barbecue sauce or garlic mayonnaise. They also go well with chips for a pub-style meal. If you like onion dishes, try roasted onions or plain onions cooked in the same machine. Onion rings in air fryer batches are best eaten within minutes of cooking.
Storing and reheating
Cooked onion rings keep in a covered container in the fridge for 1 day, though they lose their crunch. Reheat in the air fryer at 180 °C for 3–4 minutes, until steaming hot all the way through. Do not refreeze rings that have been cooked. Uncooked homemade rings can be frozen on a tray and then bagged, ready to cook from frozen.
Homemade onion rings
For 4 servings, cut 2 large white onions into rings 1 cm thick and separate them. Put 60 g plain flour mixed with ½ tsp smoked paprika and ½ tsp salt in one bowl, 1 beaten egg with 2 tbsp milk in a second, and 80 g panko breadcrumbs in a third. Dip each ring in flour, then egg, then crumbs, pressing the crumbs on firmly.
Spray the rings lightly with oil and cook at 190 °C for 10–12 minutes, turning halfway, until deep golden. The onion should feel tender when you pierce it. A blooming onion needs a whole large onion cut into 12 petals, the same coating applied twice and a basket tall enough to hold it. Cook it at 180 °C for 25–30 minutes, and use a larger air fryer, since a standard 4-litre machine will not fit it. Crispy fried onions from a tub only need 2–3 minutes at 160 °C to freshen up, so watch them closely. Homemade rings are not dairy-free or vegan.
Troubleshooting
- The onion rings are soggy
- The basket was too full, or they were thawed. Cook from frozen in a single layer and leave a little space between the rings.
- The coating is dark but the onion is cold
- The heat was too high for the batch. Lower to 180 °C, add 2–3 minutes and check that the centre is hot.
- The coating falls off the homemade rings
- The onion was wet. Pat the rings dry, dip in flour first, then egg, then crumbs, and press the crumbs on firmly.

Yes, if the basket is large enough for a whole onion. Cut into petals, coat in seasoned flour, egg and crumbs, spray with oil and cook at 180 °C for 25–30 minutes.
How do you reheat onion rings in an air fryer?
