Honey Roast Parsnips in the Air Fryer

Roast parsnips are the vegetable that gets the oven hot and busy on Christmas Day, yet they only need 20 minutes in a basket. The air fryer gives you caramelised edges, a soft sweet middle and a sticky honey glaze without turning on a full-size oven. This is a simple, reliable method for a Sunday roast or the festive table.

Why the air fryer works for parsnips

Parsnips are high in natural sugars, which is why they caramelise so well and why they also burn quickly. Parsnips in air fryer baskets suit this perfectly: the fan-driven heat browns the outside fast, the batons stay dry rather than steaming, and you can control the glaze at the end instead of hoping the oven timing works out. The result is the crisp, sticky parsnip that roast dinners need.

It also saves oven space. Roast parsnips in air fryer form take 20 minutes, which means you can cook them while the meat rests, or alongside a Christmas dinner when every shelf in the oven is full. A tablespoon of oil is all the fat you need for 600 g.

How to make parsnips in the air fryer

Tap a time to start a timer.

  1. Prepare the parsnips Peel the parsnips and trim the ends. Cut them into batons about 6 cm long and 1.5 cm thick. If the cores are woody on large parsnips, cut them out, as they stay tough after cooking. Dry the pieces with kitchen roll.
  2. Season Put the parsnips in a bowl, add the olive oil, salt, pepper and thyme and toss until they are evenly coated. Keep the honey back for now.
  3. Cook Heat the air fryer to 190 °C for . Tip in the parsnips and cook for at 190 °C, shaking the basket every , until they are tender and starting to colour.
  4. Glaze Drizzle over the honey, toss the parsnips in the basket and cook for more. The honey caramelises quickly, so watch them in the final minutes.
  5. Check and serve The parsnips are done when a knife slides in easily and the edges are dark golden. Serve straight away, while the glaze is still sticky.

Tips

  • Cut to the same size. Thick tops and thin tips cook at different speeds. Halve or quarter the thick ends lengthways so all the pieces are about 1.5 cm wide.
  • Leave space. Air must flow around each baton. For a larger family meal cook in two batches and combine them for the final 2 minutes.
  • Use the heat. If you are cooking a roast, keep the parsnips warm under foil while you finish the gravy. They stay crisp for around 10 minutes.

Serving

Serve the parsnips with roast chicken or a turkey dinner, with Brussels sprouts and carrots, or put them on a nut roast table for a vegetarian meal. If you are cooking a larger menu, the Christmas dinner guide shows how to sequence everything. Honey roast parsnips air fryer batches also work as a side with sausages and mash.

Storing and reheating

Leftover parsnips keep for up to 2 days in a sealed container in the fridge. Reheat them in the air fryer at 180 °C for 4–5 minutes until steaming hot all the way through (75 °C). The glaze will be stickier, but the edges crisp up again.

Variations

  • Maple and mustard: Swap the honey for 1 tbsp maple syrup and 1 tsp wholegrain mustard.
  • Parmesan parsnips: Toss the cooked batons with 2 tbsp finely grated Parmesan for the final 2 minutes, and use a vegetarian-labelled hard cheese if you are cooking for vegetarians (not dairy-free).
  • Spiced parsnips: Add 1 tsp ground cumin and ½ tsp chilli flakes with the oil, and leave the honey out for a savoury side.

Troubleshooting

The parsnips burn at the edges
The honey went on too early. Add it for the last 5 minutes only, and keep the pieces a similar thickness. Thin tips can be cut shorter so they do not char.
They are hard in the middle
The batons were too thick or the cores woody. Cut thick ends into quarters, remove tough cores and cook for another 3–5 minutes if a knife meets resistance.
The parsnips are soft rather than crisp
The basket was too full or the parsnips damp. Cook in two batches if needed, dry the pieces well and shake the basket during cooking.

Frequently asked questions

How long do parsnips take in an air fryer?

Batons 1.5 cm thick take about 20 minutes at 190 °C, shaken every 5 minutes. Thinner chips take 12–15 minutes.

Do you need to parboil parsnips before air frying?

No. Parboiling gives a fluffier, crunchier outside if you want it, but the air fryer cooks raw batons through in 20 minutes. If you do parboil, simmer for 5 minutes, dry well and cook for 12–15 minutes.

Can you cook frozen parsnips in the air fryer?

Yes. Cook frozen roast parsnips straight from the freezer at 190 °C for 16–20 minutes, shaking halfway. Do not defrost them first.

Can you cook carrots and parsnips together in an air fryer?

Yes. Cut both to the same thickness and cook at 190 °C for 20 minutes. Add the honey for the final 5 minutes to glaze them.

How do you make parsnip crisps in an air fryer?

Slice them very thinly with a peeler, toss in a little oil and salt and cook at 160 °C for 8–10 minutes, shaking often, until crisp.
