Radishes in the Air Fryer
Raw radishes are sharp and peppery, so many people never think of cooking them. Radishes in the air fryer lose their bite in about 12 minutes at 200 °C and turn tender, slightly sweet and a little like a new potato, with browned edges. They are a good use for a bunch that has been sitting in the fridge and a low-carb side dish.

Why the air fryer works for radishes
Radishes in air fryer baskets lose their raw heat quickly. The mustard-like compounds that make them peppery break down when heated, and the hot air browns the outside while the inside softens. What you end up with is mild and slightly sweet, with a texture closer to a roast turnip or new potato than a raw radish. It is a good use for a bunch that has gone a little soft in the salad drawer, because roasting hides the limp texture.
The method is simple and fast. Radishes are small and uniform, so they cook evenly with almost no preparation, and the whole job takes under 20 minutes. If you want a low-carb alternative to potatoes, roasted radishes with garlic and parsley are a convincing stand-in, particularly alongside a roast or a steak.

Tips
- Buy firm, bright radishes. Soft or hollow ones turn leathery. If the radishes have fresh leaves, they are a sign of recent harvest.
- Cut to similar sizes. Halving small radishes and quartering big ones means every piece softens at the same time.
- Keep the leaves. Fresh radish leaves can be wilted into soup or blitzed into pesto. Just remove them before cooking, as they burn in the air fryer.
Serving
Serve roasted radishes beside a steak, roast chicken or sausages, or toss them through a warm salad with new potatoes and mustard dressing. They also go well with carrots and green beans cooked in the same way. More side dishes are in the vegetable recipes. Radishes in air fryer form also make a good topping for toast with soft cheese.
Storing and reheating
Roasted radishes keep for up to 3 days in a covered container in the fridge. Reheat them in the air fryer at 180 °C for 3–4 minutes, until steaming hot all the way through (75 °C). Radish chips are best eaten the same day, as they soften quickly. If they do, a minute or two at 160 °C brings them back.
Variations
- Garlic and parmesan: Add 2 tbsp grated parmesan for the last 2 minutes and a grated garlic clove just before serving. This version is not vegan.
- Radish chips: Slice the radishes very thinly, toss with oil and salt, and cook at 180 °C for 8–10 minutes until crisp at the edges.
- Lemon and dill: Finish the radishes with a squeeze of lemon, a little zest and chopped dill for a fresher, lighter flavour.
Troubleshooting
- The radishes still taste sharp and raw
- They need longer or smaller pieces. Cut them into quarters and add 2–3 minutes. The pepperiness fades as the centres soften.
- The radishes are wrinkled and dry
- They were cooked too long or the pieces were too small. Keep to 12 minutes at 200 °C, use a little more oil, or choose larger radishes.
- The radishes go soggy and grey
- They were wet when they went in. Dry the cut radishes thoroughly and avoid crowding the basket, as steam makes them dull and soft.
Frequently asked questions
Can you cook radishes in an air fryer?
Yes. Halved or quartered radishes roast well in an air fryer. Their sharp flavour mellows into something between a turnip and a new potato.
How long do radishes take in the air fryer?
Halved radishes take about 12 minutes at 200 °C, shaken a few times. Thin slices for chips take 8–10 minutes at 180 °C.
How do you make radish chips in the air fryer?
Slice radishes as thinly as you can, about 2 mm, pat dry, toss with a little oil and salt, then cook at 180 °C for 8–10 minutes, shaking every 3 minutes. They crisp as they cool.
Are air fryer radishes a good low-carb potato swap?
Roast radishes have a similar soft texture to boiled or roast new potatoes, but with fewer carbs. They work well as a swap in a roast dinner, though the flavour is slightly peppery.
Can I air fry daikon radish?
Yes. Cut peeled daikon into 2 cm cubes or batons and cook at 200 °C for 15–18 minutes, shaking twice. It is milder than red radishes and takes longer.
